WARRUNE Remastered Out Now in Early Access

Greetings, soldiers of hell! As I write to you this morning, the newest version of WARRUNE will be available to download in Early Access. At this time you can download the early access rulebook, enemy and slayer sheets, and zone cards for Mission 1. Since it is early access, there’s still room for changes and YOU can help make the game better. I read your comments and I’m very interested in hearing what you like, what you don’t, and any questions you have.

I’ve been working on the new WARRUNE for the better part of three years. The old version had a small cult following for being a faithful Doom tabletop experience and for having strong vibes and sweet combat. Not bad for a game I knocked out in a couple of weeks for a game jam.

I’m thankful for all the folks who told me they liked the game. I’m thankful for everyone who got to play it through the Solo But Not Alone charity drive. And I’m super thankful for the folks who threw 10 or 20 bucks at a project that was basically 40 pages of vibes and some cool ideas.

So, let’s talk about the major changes in new WARRUNE.

Change #1: WARRUNE is now a cooperative and solo strategy game. The lite roleplaying is gone in favor of a fully featured strategy game. The rules are more procedural, and a little more dense. But why? Well, the feedback I got from game designers about old WARRUNE boiled down to “Cool vibes, great combat, but it’s hardly a roleplaying game.” Hell yeah! It was always meant to be a tactical combat game, so I redesigned towards that. So you may be surprised to open up the new WARRUNE and find LOTS more rules, but go into it expecting something closer to Star Wars Imperial Assault or Gloomhaven (Doomhaven?).

Change #2: New Art. I think the old WARRUNE had a snazzy look for what it was, but I always felt it could be more BRUTAL. So in the early access version you’ll find a few pieces of collage art, inspired by grindcore and death metal album covers. Some more artwork is in the works for the final release, so expect more grotesque goodness in the future.

Change #3: Missions and new enemies! WARRUNE will include a campaign (called an Epoch) of 4 missions. Each mission has a unique arena layout, zones, objectives, and enemies and torments. And you’ll be able to mix and match the arena and objectives from one mission with the enemies and torments from another for extra replayability. In early access you get Mission 1, which is designed as a tutorial to teach you the rules.

Change #4: More upgrades and goodies. WARRUNE now has more upgrades, more weapons, and mission mutators to add extra variety to each mission.

So on that note, enjoy the changes, make sure you download all four PREVIEW files to get the rules (in bold red or black and white), enemy and slayer sheets, and zones to play with. And be sure to leave a comment or reach out with any questions you may have, AND did you know you could leave private feedback by leaving a review on the itchio store page (5 stars are always appreciated and help the algorithm take notice of the game).

Diabolically yours,

Victor
Curse Night

Errata: Some typos were caught and minor fixes made from last night’s version of the early access. All rules files should be updated now.
